Man Charged With Stabbing Grocery Employee During Shoplifting Incident

A man was charged after he allegedly stabbed a store employee during a shoplifting incident at Food Giant on North Main Street in Hopkinsville Wednesday night.

Hopkinsville Police say 57-year-old Merle Watkins was confronted by employees while attempting to shoplift meat and stabbed an employee in the arm with a knife then broke a window with a fire extinguisher.

Watkins was reportedly stopped by law enforcement in a parking lot off North Virginia Street. He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief, first-degree robbery, resisting arrest, and first-degree assault.
