A pair of Trigg County High School alumni, alongside others, find themselves front and center leaders of a Soft Skills seminar — one that began earlier this week at The Way Christian Youth Center in Cadiz, and will be running for the next six weeks.
Edward Jones Financial Advisor Patrick Dawson and Trigg County Treasurer Lucy Oliver Kyler are part of an effort targeting middle and high school students not yet active in the local and regional workforce, and the class is in Year No. 5 of a partnership with the Trigg County Schools.
Looking to give back to his community, Dawson said the class really focuses on the finer things one might not immediately on job descriptions.
Kyler expanded, saying that if even one little takeaway is remembered — especially during a crunch time — then it will have mattered.
Balancing a checkbook, changing a tire, cooking a meal and caring for a child can deemed as more concrete, harder skills, but life has other curveballs. Dawson noted it’s those curveballs on which this class will address.
Kyler and Dawson happen to be in positions of authority, with the knowledge necessary to work with interns, hire part-time and full-time employees, or unfortunately let individuals go.
Dawson said the difference between candidates for positions can come down to these “soft skills.”
