The Pennyrile Children’s Advocacy Center is working to ensure that children are not further victimized by the intervention systems designed to protect them.
During a presentation last week to the Elkton Rotary Club hosted by the United Way of the Pennyrile, Executive Director Candra Barnett said back in the 1970s there were not a lot of laws that laid out how agencies responded to child sexual abuse. She added they sought to change that when 15 children’s advocacy centers were established by state law in March of 2000.
When a report is made to law enforcement, social services, and advocacy centers spring into action.
Barnett said one of the main goals of the program is to reduce the number of times that children have to share their traumatizing stories.
She added they now have a presence in every one of the nine counties they serve by doing case reviews.
The Pennyrile Children’s Advocacy Center serves Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, Muhlenberg, Todd, and Trigg counties. Learn more by visiting PennyrileCAC.org.
