During the Team Kentucky Update on Thursday, Governor Andy Beshear was joined by 3rd District State Senator Whitney Westerfield and NBA Player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to ceremonially sign Senate Bill 111.
Before discussing the bills that have been signed and vetoed, Beshear clarified that SB 111 mandates health insurance coverage for speech therapy as a treatment for stuttering, and then introduced Westerfield and Kidd-Gilchrist.

Kidd-Gilchrist thanked the Governor, Senator Westerfield, and his family before sharing his story from 2010 when he made a commitment to UK and the state. He mentioned feeling fortunate to be able to assist the state and adults like himself who stutter in the future.

Furthermore, during Thursday’s update, Governor Beshear was accompanied by Lexington Artist Ken Burney and Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Matt Gibson for the official unveiling of the 2024 Governor’s Derby Celebration poster, titled “Liberated,” in honor of the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4th.
