Two Area Roads Selected For Rubber-Modified Asphalt Road Projects

Governor Andy Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman announced funding Monday that would provide rubber-modified asphalt for two local road projects using waste tires.

Christian County is set to receive north of $117,000 for Millers Mill Road, while Todd County will receive over $156,500 for work on State Line Road. The selected roads have road culverts, shoulders, and bases in good condition.

The grant funding will be used for the application of asphalt overlay to county roads. Thin asphalt overlays using rubber-modified asphalt have been shown to reduce noise, are more resistant to cracking and rutting, and increase the life of the roadway by 7 to 10 years.

The funding for these projects comes from the Kentucky Waste Tire Trust Fund, which receives $2 from every new tire sold in the state.
