The City of Cadiz will receive a $75,000 grant from the state to assist with the playground renovation project at West Cadiz Park.
The grant was one of 23 issued statewide that come from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, which receives $2 from the sale of each new tire in the state. The fund helps manage the approximately 5 million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and promotes the development of markets for recycled tire products.
The $75,000 will help with a soft surface for the playground at West Cadiz Park.
The partnership between the Cadiz-Trigg County Joint Parks and Recreation Board and the Army Corps of Engineers began last year. The estimated cost to remove the sand and equipment from the 115 by 40-foot playground and replace it with a soft surface would be around $100,000.
Since the partnership was announced, discussions have been held to create an adaptive area to make the playground ADA-compliant which would cost around $70,000 to pour and cover the surface before any equipment is installed — which the grant should fund.
The Corps of Engineers and the City of Cadiz have announced they would provide some in-kind work for the overhaul.
The Corps of Engineers plans to provide around $30,000 from the Handshake Partnership Program which has distributed nearly $3 million in seed money for projects over the past 15 years.
If the playground is upgraded, the Nashville office would be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment while the city would provide upkeep of the base surface.
West Cadiz Park, known officially as the Cadiz Recreation Area, is one of 26 properties maintained by the Nashville District that includes day-use areas, campgrounds, boat ramps, and recreation areas.
The City of Cadiz maintains just two park properties — the Juanita Oates Park on Hayden Street and Cadiz Central Park at the west end of the Cadiz Walking Trail.
