The city of Cadiz is one of the 10 fastest-growing cities in Kentucky according to estimates released last week by the Kentucky Data Center.
Its 2023 estimate showed Cadiz with 2,713 people, up 166 people from 2020 or 6.5%.
The increase over the past three years is the second-largest among Pennyrile cities, behind only Elkton’s 8% jump. It was the fifth-highest jump in the state with Elkton number three.
In 2010, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a resolution that reclassified Cadiz from a fifth-class to a fourth-class city. As part of the change, which required a minimum population of 3,000 people, Cadiz was able to collect taxes from liquor by the drink sales.
The 2020 Census showed Cadiz with a population of 2,540 people. If the numbers were accurate, it would mean Cadiz showed an 18% decline in population from 2010 to 2020.
In the past 23 years, Cadiz has shown a population increase of 340 people according to the data center and census numbers, and ranks as the ninth-largest city in the Pennyrile region.
Meanwhile, Hopkinsville remains the largest city in the Pennyrile region with 30,813 people in 2023 although that was a 1.2% drop from 2020.
Oak Grove with 7,973 people is the fourth-largest city in the Pennyrile behind Hopkinsville, Henderson, and Madisonville. All three of the largest cities showed a population decline over the past three years. Oak Grove showed a four-tenths of a percent increase.
Hopkinsville is the 11th largest city in the state according to the estimates, with about 1,300 more people than No. 12 Independence. Nicholasville is No. 10 with 1,600 more people than Hopkinsville.
Meanwhile, the City of Elkton is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state according to the estimates.
The Kentucky Data Center said Elkton had 2,230 people in 2023 — an increase of 165 people from 2020 or 8%.
It was the the third-largest increase by percentage in the state behind only Pippa Passes and Fairfield.
The increase moves Elkton past Dawson Springs as the 11th largest city in the nine-county Pennyrile region.
The city of Guthrie had 1,335 people in 2023, down two people from 2020.
Population estimates in Princeton showed a slight decline over the past three years according to the estimates while the numbers were up in Lyon County.
Princeton’s 2023 estimate of 6,194 people was down 64 from 2020 or one percent. Princeton is still the fifth largest city in the nine-county Pennyrile region behind Hopkinsville, Henderson, Madisonville, and Oak Grove. Central City is No. 6, with about 300 fewer people than Princeton.
Meanwhile, Kuttawa is the eighth-fastest growing city in the state at 5.7%. Its 2023 population was estimated at 667 — an increase of 36 people.
Eddyville also showed a population increase of 2.8%. Its total of 2,444 people in 2023 was an increase of 66 people. It’s the tenth-largest city in the Pennyrile region.
