David Lea Sturges, 89, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky died at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 27, 2024, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
David is preceded in death by John R Sturges and Elizabeth R Sturges (Parents) Jack Sturges (Brother) and Susan Sturges (Daughter)
Dave was born on January 3, 1935 in Manhasset. Long Island, New York. He graduated from Manhasset High School where he played La Crosse and football with Jim Brown of Cleveland Brown’s fame. After graduation, he came to Kentucky and graduated from Centre College in 1957 where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
After graduation, he returned to New York to work in the family business, but in 1961, he came to Hopkinsville where he made his home. He was the owner of Blue Lake Block Company. When he sold Blue Lake rather than take early retirement he launched into his second career, real estate, and established Coldwell Banker MetroNet Realty with his business partner, Gay Nell Rittenberry. There he used his innovative skills to create the very first Real Estate website in Hopkinsville.
Throughout his life Dave was very active in many professional and civic organizations. He was a member of the Hopkinsville Jaycees where he was named the Outstanding Young Man in 1968. As a Jaycee, he introduced the program of setting American flags in front of houses. He also served on the Hopkinsville Economic Council, the Industrial Foundation, the Hopkinsville City Council, the Executive Board of the Hopkinsville Republican Party, the Jennie Stuart Board of Trustees, and the Board of Pennyroyal Hospice. He was also a member of the National Precast Concrete Association and served as its president from 1979-1980. He was a member of the Hopkinsville Christian Todd Board of Realtors and was president in 2010. In 2016, he was inducted into the Board of Realtors Hall of Fame. Undoubtedly, one of his services to the community of which he was most proud was his work with Fort Campbell and the Hopkinsville Military Affairs Committee. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and founded the Pachyderm Club.
Survivors include his sons: David L. Sturges, Jr. of Hopkinsville, KY, and Bill (Carolyn) Sturges of Owensboro, KY; his daughter, Virginia Lynn Sturges Albracht of Hopkinsville, KY; his grandchildren, James Albracht, Dr. Stephanie (Brent) Albracht-Layne, Samuel Sturges and Katie Sturges and a great-grandchild, Bronson Layne. And his faithful companion Milo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials can be given to the Wounded Warrior Project or Max’s Hope Animal Rescue.
