Every year, officials with the Dyslexia Association of the Pennyrile gather at The War Memorial Building in Hopkinsville for their vaunted and vibrant “Trivia Night” — tables of 10, or less if daring, all vying for the title of “smartest in the room.”
And all for a good cause.
Executive Director Vickie Jones told the News Edge plans have been set for 6:30 PM June 14, 30 minutes earlier than usual, with doors opening at 5 PM.
It’s $35 a ticket, which includes dinner, and to the victor go the spoils: $1,000 from title sponsor Planters Bank.
Eight rounds of eight questions on different topics, she said, including general knowledge, science, some form of history, sports, and a few other special categories of which she wants to be a surprise.
It’s a blessing, but the event is usually limited on tables, and she is full up on prizes. However, anyone wishing to participate, donate, or both can call her at (270) 836-4804.
A very small non-profit organization, Jones noted she serves as a lay advocate for parents and local school systems, working as a United Way agency with grant writing and fundraising the key vehicles for financial aid.
Among its many services, Jones said they provide screenings at $100 — with some scholarships available to defray even that cost — and while no diagnosis is given, on-site psychologists provide analysis on any potentially present dyslexia attributes.
Furthermore, using an Orton-Gillingham approach, tutorial services are provided through Barton Reading & Spelling. She added that “early detection is best” because of the intense amount of learning and training that comes in primary and intermediate school, but screenings don’t start until 6 years old — in order to better observe development patterns.
And children aren’t the only people in need.
