Harold William “Bill” Schafer, age 78, of Cadiz, passed away Monday, June 24, 2024, at his home.
Born July 4, 1945, in Urbana, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harold Arthur Schafer and Dolly (Hammond) Schafer.
Bill was a lifelong farmer and a seasonal worker for the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
He was a faithful member of Bethel Methodist Church and was one of the founders of the South Road Volunteer Fire Department where he served as chief and instructor for many years.
Bill’s interests and talents were many, and his hands were rarely still. Besides farming, he loved spending time with his children, working in the garden or his woodworking shop, camping, and traveling, having traveled to all 50 states and most Canadian provinces.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carole (Follis) Schafer; his children, Harold William Schafer, Jr. (Holly), Amy Stead, and Lisa Schafer-Thomas; two stepsons, Stephen Gordley and Robert Gordley (Jenni); six grandchildren, Ryan Stead (Rachel), Daniel Stead, Jack Gordley (Diana), Brandon Schafer (Emily), Kathryn Gordley, and Adam Gordley; a great-granddaughter, Brayley Schafer; and special nephew, J.J. Follis.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p,.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2024. Funeral services will be at Bethel Methodist Church, 211 Bethel Church Road in Cadiz, at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2024, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Rev. Steve Spitzer will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery.
