Work on a new playground at West Cadiz Park should begin after the Trigg County Country Ham Festival in October.
Replacing the current playground is a project that began 11 months ago. After the Cadiz-Trigg County Joint Parks and Recreation Board agreed to enter into an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns and maintains West Cadiz Park, more partners have joined the project.
At a special called meeting on June 5, the board voted to give $100,000 to the project for a new playground that would remove the sand and equipment from the 115 by 40-foot playground and replace it with a soft surface. In addition, there would be an adaptive area to make the playground ADA-compliant.
The Corps of Engineers agreed to give $40,000 with Cadiz-Trigg County Tourism, the City of Cadiz, and the Cadiz Rotary Club pitching in over $35,000.
Parks and Rec Director Jeff Hunter told the board at last week’s meeting that since the scope of the project has increased with more money, a discussion with Kayl Kite with the Corps of Engineers revealed they will now accept three bids with nine possibilities.

In May, the city received a $75,000 grant from the state to provide a soft surface for the playground.
Hunter said any work on the playground would begin the Monday after the annual Ham Festival, which gets heavy use for rides and other attractions.
West Cadiz Park, known officially as the Cadiz Recreation Area, is one of 26 properties maintained by the Nashville District that includes day-use areas, campgrounds, boat ramps, and recreation areas.
Also at the meeting, board member Scotty Hampton wondered aloud if the construction of a pickleball court in the city, possibly at the park near the new playground, would be feasible.
