NBA All-Star and former Murray State Racer Ja Morant held his first-ever ProCamps festivities in Murray’s CFSB Center Thursday morning — hosting more than 200 youth from around the country seeking skills development and a sneak peek inside one of the league’s top talents.
An injury and a suspension limited the stellar point guard to just nine games in 2023-24, and as such, the Memphis Grizzlies finished near the bottom of the Western Conference.
While recovering, however, the South Carolina native has spent considerable time organizing his new AAU team, “Twelve Time,” while embracing these camps — putting him in contact with kids on a near-daily basis.
Full-time coaching, though, will have to wait a little longer.
Morant embraced a little 1-on-1 action, and several kids delivered — including Darius Anderson.
An 11-year-old from Hopkinsville, he actually topped Morant 6-2, using his 24 seconds to wisely slash for a layup and free throw, before burying a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top key.
Morant turned and smiled to the huge crowd as the ball went through the net, and pointed at his right arm — signifying the kid has “ice in his veins.”
Himself recently cleared for basketball activities, Morant also noted he was close to 100%.
Morant’s camp continues Friday, before alumni will be gathering Saturday not only for the annual Racer Hoopalooza celebration, but also for Morant’s induction into the Murray State Athletics “Hall of Fame.”
