It was a weekend of some positive progress for a very young University Heights Academy Lady Blazers team at the Bluegrass State Games high school volleyball competition. The defending 2nd Region champions enter the 2024 season with a roster full of new faces after losing 10 players from last year’s squad.

In addition to the new faces, senior Olivia Oakley was just cleared for competition at the beginning of last week after suffering a knee injury during the off-season.

The weekend for the Lady Blazers began with pool play on Friday. UHA was placed in a pool along with Southwestern and Lafayette.

The opening match of pool play for the Lady Blazers saw Southwestern take a straight-set win by scores of 21-5 and 21-11.

Friday finished up with a match against Lafayette. This one belonged to the Generals as Lafayette won in straight sets, 21-2 and 21-10.

Saturday was a second day of pool play with UHA grouped up with Presentation, Walton-Verona, and Eastern. It was also a day that saw some significant progress. The Lady Blazers dropped a tough 3-set match in the opener of the day, falling to Walton-Verona 21-14, 16-21, 10-15.

The second match of the day Saturday was another battle for the young Lady Blazers. This time it was Presentation taking a 3-setter by the score of 17-21, 21-15, and 17-15.

The day wrapped up with the Lady Blazers taking on Eastern. Again, it was a tough 3-set match, but Eastern came up with the win, turning back UHA 16-21, 21-17, and 15-9.

Bracket play was set to take place Sunday for UHA, but a last-minute schedule change late Saturday night resulted in the Lady Blazers forfeiting a match that had initially been scheduled to start at 10am, but ended up being reset for a 9am start.
