Inaugural ‘Big Bee’ Spelling Bee Deemed Successful

More than $1,600 was raised during last Thursday’s inaugural “Big Bee” Spelling Bee at the Hopkinsville Brewing Company — all fittingly in favor of the Christian County Literacy Council.

Amy Rogers, executive director of Visit Hopkinsville, said the support from sponsors like Walmart Distribution Center, the Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority, Planters Bank, Holiday Inn Suites, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library and others really made a difference — as did the number of spellers, who chipped in $20 each to compete.

She said the goal is to eventually host what could become one of the largest adult-only local spelling bees inside the Alhambra Theatre, perhaps playing off of the success from the youth-only Scripps Spelling Bee over the last two years.

James Hunter came away as the first-place winner, correctly spelling the word “globular,” while Abby Hess took second place, both taking trophies and gift baskets home for their efforts.

An adjective, globular means “having the shape of a globe or globule, likely composed of compactly folded polypeptide chains arranged in a spherical form.”
