A jury convicted former Todd County Sheriff W.D. “Billy” Stokes of third-degree sodomy last week.
The verdict found Stokes guilty of engaging in “deviant sexual intercourse” with an inmate at the Todd County Detention Center in April 2022, where he was employed as a deputy jailer.
The jury recommended a two-year prison sentence with his trial lasting three days in Todd County Circuit Court with Circuit Judge Joe W. Hendricks, Jr.
Stokes remains lodged in the Todd County Detention Center, with his sentencing scheduled for Wednesday, September 4. A sex offender evaluation was also ordered.
Stokes was arrested by Kentucky State Police in May 2023 following an investigation revealing a witness had seen him in a maintenance room at the jail with a male inmate. According to his arrest warrant, the inmate disclosed during a police interview that he had performed a sexual act on Stokes.
In June 2023, Stokes was indicted on charges of third-degree sodomy, first-degree official misconduct, second-degree sexual abuse, and sodomy. Two of the charges were dropped before the trial, with the official misconduct dismissed during the trial.
He served as the Todd County Sheriff from 2007 to 2010.
