Proposal Would Lower Christian County School Tax Rate

Christian County Superintendent of Schools Chris Bentzel said he plans to recommend to the school board to reduce the property tax rate at Thursday’s meeting.

In a four-minute video released late Wednesday afternoon, Bentzel said reducing the property tax rate by 1.2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation would still generate an extra $1.3 million and still keep Christian County with one of the lowest tax rates in the state.

Numbers released by Bentzel on Wednesday show all nine daycare and aftercare facilities in the school district operating with a surplus totaling nearly $1.5 million. Specifically, the MLK Early Learning Center has a $313,863 surplus in the current fiscal year.

Bentzel also said the new Christian County High School construction project is on time and under budget at $138 million with a $5 million emergency fund. The new school, which will combine Hopkinsville High and Christian County High to become one of the 10 largest high schools in the state, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2026.

The Christian County School Board will meet Thursday night at the board office on Glass Avenue.
