Dry weather with below-normal temperatures will be featured through midweek with a return to highs in the 90s expected by this weekend.
Keith Cooley, a lead forecaster with the Paducah Weather Office, said a high-pressure system will build across the area through Wednesday, bringing with it low dew points and high temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s with lows in the mid to upper 50s.
Temperatures will increase each day from Thursday through next Monday and Cooley said there is no rain in for forecast.
click to download audioParts of Todd County got nearly an inch of rain on Saturday, while Christian County got three-tenths of an inch of rain, and Caldwell County got around a quarter-inch. The Trigg County Mesonet site near Canton did not record any rain on Saturday, putting the county in its longest stretch with no rain since May and June of 2023.
Cooley said parts of Southeast Missouri are in the midst of a drought although that could spread to western Kentucky if it remains dry.
click to download audioWeather officials said dewpoints will remain in the 60s over the next week, so the heat index will not be much of a concern. However, as the humidity drops below 40% throughout the area and conditions remain dry, the fire danger may eventually become elevated.
The rainfall totals for August range from 0.36 in Caldwell County to 0.63 inches in Trigg County to an inch and a quarter in both Christian County and Todd counties which puts it near the top 10 driest Augusts on record. Weather service records said the driest August was in 1996 at 11-hundredths of an inch.
