Patrons of the Trigg County Historical Society are in for a treat next week, as officials have orchestrated a double-feature of speakers for the community.

During next Tuesday’s regularly-scheduled 6 PM meeting, President Bob Brame notes one of the best local storytellers, Gayle Terrell, is on tap to speak about all things Cadiz and Trigg County — before closing with a Q&A session.

Then, at 10 AM Saturday, October 5, Rick Gregory will come into town for a discussion on both the Night Riders and the Bell Witch Story. A native of Adams, Tennessee, with a farm bordering the Red River, he has his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from Vanderbilt University.

His dissertation, titled “Desperate Farmers: The Dark Tobacco Planters’ Protective Association from 1905-1915,” is appointment reading and among some of his early career works. In 1996, he helped co-author the bicentennial history of Robertson County. Then, in 2020, he helped co-author the same timeline for Springfield, Robertson County’s seat.

In September 2023, his book “The Bell Witch Legend: In Myth and Memory” was published by the University of Tennessee Press, and he’s in the middle of penning another tome about the Dark Fired Planters’ Protective Association and the Night Riders.
