Scores of family members and friends sneaked into the Trigg County Fiscal Court meeting Monday night, surprising Cissy Lawrence — as Judge-Executive Stan Humphries and magistrates presented the long-standing Trigg County Senior Citizen’s Center director with the 2024 Reverend Dr. Tom Martin Award for Community Service.
The honor, bestowed annually since 2017 to those who show gracious attitude, poise and thoughtfulness to Cadiz and beyond, caught her off guard in the middle of a presentation — one relaying just how busy she and her staff have been this year, and what’s in store for the next.
Humphries noted Lawrence joins her husband and former magistrate, Larry, on the board — as he was awarded such in 2022 following his retirement from civic duty — and that like her husband, she was deserving of recognition for her local efforts.
In the last year, Lawrence said daily congregate meals have averaged nearly 60 people, with another 15-to-20 opting for curbside services. Presently, the wait list — sitting at close to 20 more people — is also being tended to.
That’s not even counting the home-delivered meals, which she urged “change lives.” More than 100 of those go out on a frequent basis, bringing warmth and comfort to those most in need.
And, in particular, to one unnamed man.
Through the center, more than 40 houses are cleaned per week, while on campus there is daily exercise, twice-weekly line dancing classes, and twice-a-month dances that are extremely popular. Social programming is offered through visits from local officials, and often litigators stop by to discuss difficult, but necessary, topics like power of attorney, living wills, estate planning and the handling of potential cyber criminals.
What’s more: the city/county/tourism/Rotary senior van, organized and paid for this past year, is nearly ready for liftoff. County Treasurer Lucy Kyler, as well as Humphries, said final touches should be coming the first week of January — before a public ceremony christening it will commence.
No matter what is going on at the senior center, Humphries said other community’s often pay attention to what’s happening in Trigg County.
