Sue Mathis, age 89, of Cadiz, died on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at Princeton Nursing and Rehabilitation, Princeton, Kentucky.
She was born on January 31, 1935, in Princeton, Kentucky, to the late George Elliot and Mary Elizabeth Rodgers Hawkins.
Sue worked as a teller at Trigg County Farmers Bank for several years. She later took on a role at LBL’s Homeplace 1850’s Farm where she brought history to life, re-enacting the daily routines of a 19th-century farm wife with authenticity and enthusiasm.
She was a longtime, faithful member of Cadiz Baptist Church, where she served in various capacities throughout the years. Sue was a remarkable cook and an avid gardener, whose yard and flower garden were always pristine and blooming, a testament to her dedication and care. She most loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who fondly called her Grandma Sue.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James E. Mathis; five brothers, Robert, George, Richard, Roy, and Ray Hawkins; and her sister, Louise Thomas.
She is survived by her son, James “Jimmy” Mathis, Jr. and wife Leslie of Cadiz; her daughter, Candy M. Harper of North Augusta, SC; her grandchildren, Shiloh Mathis, Moriah Hancock, Wesley Mathis, Sierra Mathis, and Duston Harper; nine great-grandchildren, Gage Mathis, Ellie West, Casen Render, Skylar Mathis, Lanndon Mathis, Waylon Mathis, Jaxon Mathis, Thomas Paul Hart, III, and Irelyn Acree; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
