A Hopkinsville woman has been charged after a police officer was attacked by her dog on West 2nd Street in Hopkinsville Saturday afternoon.
Hopkinsville Police say an officer was trying to bring two dogs back to their home that were walking around the neighborhood when one attacked him, and he discharged his gun several times to stop the attack, which killed the dog.
The home located at the intersection of South Cleveland Avenue has signs stating, “Beware of the dog.” However, police say the dogs were running loose in the neighborhood when they were located.
The officer was rushed to Jennie Stuart Health for treatment for hand injuries.
Police say after further investigation, the dog was found to not have its rabies shot and the owner 68-year-old Shirley Shelton was cited on charges of dogs and cats running at large, harboring a vicious animal, and dogs to be vaccinated against rabies.
