Made official Tuesday morning, Kentucky’s federal delegation has signed and delivered a letter to President Donald J. Trump — expressing full support of Governor Andy Beshear’s request for a major disaster declaration for the Commonwealth, following the severe storms that began April 2.
This includes U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, as well as Representatives Hal Rogers, Brett Guthrie, Andy Barr, James Comer, Thomas Massie and Morgan McGarvey, who collectively affirmed that federal, state and local authorities “have been working overtime — assisting with water rescues, debris removal and emergency infrastructure repairs,” and that further federal assistance is “necessary, given the widespread nature of this disaster.”
The letter went on to note that:
+ Beshear’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration came April 11, as some parts of Kentucky saw more than a foot of rain in days — prompting mass evacuations, water rescues, and brought significant damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure.
+ Several Kentuckians tragically lost their lives.
+ Rivers and lakes neared record crests, and many communities remain without power or safe drinking water.
+ And that federal, state, and local teams continue working around the clock on rescues and emergency repairs in several parts of the Commonwealth.
