Wolf Week: A Howlin’ Good Fall Break

Fall break is all about wolves at Nature Station! Come visit our resident endangered red wolves and join their “pack” of wolf admirers. Attend special wolf programs offered each day, join the red wolves for feeding time daily at 2:30pm, become a werewolf, and more! Discover why these cunning canines have inspired awe in people for generations. See individual program descriptions below for complete details.
Wolf Week Programs:
Saturday, October 2
11am-1pm – Wolf Origami
The Japanese art of origami by celebrating wolf Week and making your own red wolves! Learn the simple folds of paper as the wolf shape slowly takes place.
11:30am-12pm – Club Tooth & Claw
*Ideal for home educators.
Hey Kids! Become a member of Club Tooth & Claw by learning to observe, search, stalk your prey. Become part of the pack through fun wolf activities and games. Earn your alpha wolf certificate in Club Tooth & Claw!
12:30pm-2pm – The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs: A Puppet Show
Bring the kids for a fun-spirited puppet show about wolves! In this retelling of the classic tale of the Three Little Pigs, we’ll meet Alexander T. Wolf and find out what really happened from his side of the story. There’s sure to be plenty of smiles and laughs along the way!
1pm-3pm – DIY Canine Track Books
It’s hard to tell whose footprint is whose! Let’s make our own field guide to show us what a wolf, dog, fox, and other animals’ tracks look like so we know them when we spot them in the woods!
2:30-2:50pm – Red Wolf Treat Time
Who’s hungry like a wolf? Our red wolves, of course! Visit with our red wolves, one of the most endangered mammals in the United States and watch them “wolf” down a tasty treat. Find out how they became so endangered and what efforts biologists have made to try to save them from extinction.
Sunday, October 3
11am-1pm – Playdough Puppies
Celebrate wolf week by making your very own canine out of air-dry clay!
11:30am-12pm – Eat, Prey, Love
*Ideal for home educators.
Explore the secret world of red wolves as we learn how they hunt, who they hunt, and why they are the best spouses and parents in the animal kingdom! Afterwards, let’s look at our resident pair of red wolves!
1pm-3pm – DIY Canine Track Books

2:30-3:15pm – Happy Wolf Day Party! – NATURE STATION
You’re invited! Celebrate Wolf Week as we throw a party during feeding time for this week’s guests of honor, the red wolves! We’ll play a fun birthday game and prepare edible presents for the wolves. Then you can help give the wolves their gifts and watch them chow down! Learn what is so special about the red wolves and why they deserve a celebration!
3:30pm-4pm – Sunday Funday: Crafty Coyotes
Coyotes are well known for their cunning and crafty manner! Help us put Campbell and Cadiz to the test as we put enrichment toys and puzzles in their habitat for these sly canines to solve and get a special treat!
Monday, October 4
1:30-2pm – The Rare Red: A Look Ahead
*Ideal for home educators.
So much has happened with the endangered red wolf in the last five years! Join us as we talk about all the recent events on the road to recovery for this species – like the recent discovery of red wolf hybrids in Texas, the plight of wild red wolves in North Carolina, and their new status as a SAFE species in American zoos!

Tuesday, October 5
1:30-2pm – I Wish I Were a Werewolf
You don’t need a full moon to learn about the legend of the werewolf and how it relates to real wolves. We will take a fun, non-scary look at werewolves through pop culture and history. Then, transform into a wolf by getting your face painted after the program!
2:30-2:50pm – Red Wolf Treat Time

Living out in Mother Nature can be extremely rough! Discover the toughest fighters out in LBL:
who’s the strongest, jumps the highest, bites the hardest, and who has the most awesome armory in
the animal kingdom!

Friday, October 8
1:30-2pm – Back With the Pack
*Ideal for home educators.
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a wolf and a coyote? How about a coyote and a dog? Join us for this fun program where we learn just how different wolves and coyotes are from our pets at home from our very own coyotes and red wolves (no matter how fluffy they are)!
2:30-2:50pm – Red Wolf Treat Time

3:30-3:50 – Red Wolf Treat Time, Second Helpings!
We’ll be giving the wolves second helpings of treats! If you missed their first treat time at 2:30, stop in for second helpings at 3:30. As you watch our wolves “wolf” down their snack, one of our naturalists will fill you in about this highly endangered species.
