In 2017, there were 2,187 crimes reported in Hopkinsville. Of those there were 799 types of theft, 591 criminal mischief and 261 drug violations. Chief Sumner indicates that 75 percent of the overall crime reported were somewhat minor offenses.
Chief Sumner says the crimes that require a more thorough investigation, once again in 2017, the department's investigation section continued to perform well above the state average in closure rates. A few examples include the 2016 state clearance rate of burglaries was 14 percent, compared to the Hopkinsville Police Department's 2017 clearance rate of 42 percent. The state's 2016 shoplifting clearance rate was 46 percent, compared to HPD's 2017 clearance rate of 70 percent. For robbery, the state's 2016 clearance rate was 21 percent, compared to the police department's 2017 clearance rate of 36 percent. And the state's 2016 clearance rate for murder was 44 percent, compared to HPD's clearance rate from 2014 through 2017 of 100 percent.
Chief Sumner also indicates the police department took part in over 150 community events geared toward building relationships with citizens.
In the release, Chief Sumner thanked Hopkinsville City Council and Mayor Carter Hendricks for their continued support. He also thanked the officers at HPD for their continued hard work.
