Westerfield Discusses Marcy’s Law

State Sen. Whitney Westerfield told the News Edge on Saturday he is proud a proposed constitutional amendment codifying victim’s rights was passed this month. Westerfield says he filed the bill three times before it gained traction and adds he worked to make it appropriate for Kentucky.

The amendment will now go before voters on the 2018 ballot, which is 283 days away. While there does exist some statutory rights for victims, Westerfield says the scope of those statutes are limited and should, therefore, be expanded.

Westerfield adds the current rights don’t go far enough.

And finally, Westerfield says current law doesn’t permit victims to have standing in court. He adds Marcy’s Law could change that.
