Hopkins County Standoff Suspect In Critical Condition

A 53-year old man is in critical condition at an Evansville hospital after authorities say he turned a gun on himself during a standoff with police in Hopkins County over the weekend. The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office says deputies went to a home on Sandcut Road around 7:25 Saturday night to serve an arrest warrant on James Chris Combs. Upon contact, deputies say Combs ran into another room and they observed him pull a handgun from his pants pocket and then threaten to harm himself.

Deputies were able to safely remove his wife from the residence and a negotiator was called to the scene as well as the Madisonville Police Department Emergency Response Team. They say Combs refused to communicate with the negotiator and after several hours the Emergency Response Team made entry into the house and located Combs in a bathroom with the gun still threatening to harm himself. Deputies report members tried to speak with Combs and get him to put the gun down but he refused. They say Combs turned the gun on himself and fired one round.

The sheriff's office reports Combs was taken to Baptist Health Emergency Room and later transferred to an Evansville hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
