Two Arrested After Shots Fired At Police Officers

Two men are facing charges after shots were allegedly fired at police during a traffic stop in Clarksville Sunday afternoon. Clarksville Police spokesman Jim Knoll says officers tried to make a traffic stop shortly before 5:00pm in the area of Circle Drive, but the vehicle fled and was later found behind a house on Woody Hills Drive. As officers approached the SUV, officers say they heard voices and 38-year old Jason Evitts appeared from the corner of the house with his hands up and he was taken into custody.

Officers say they noticed movement on the driver's side of the vehicle and then heard a gun being racked and gun shots being fired from the SUV. Police set up a perimeter and a K-9 was brought to the scene and tracked the subject, identified as 34-year old Levi West, in the woods where he was apprehended. Police reportedly recovered two handguns and a knife, and determined that West was firing a handgun in the direction of the officers.

West and Evitts were lodged in the Montgomery County Jail. West was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Evading Arrest, three counts of Driving on a Suspended or Revoked License, Reckless Driving, and Driving an Unregistered Vehicle. Police say West has an extensive criminal history involving assault, robbery, and aggravated burglary, and is already on state probation.

Evitts was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Police indicate he has an extensive criminal history involving aggravated assault, kidnapping, theft, burglary, and aggravated burglary. He also is on state probation.

Knoll says the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
