The state Senate Transportation Committee passed legislation Wednesday aimed at increasing roadway safety for both motor vehicles and bicyclists. House Bill 33 would require drivers to keep vehicles at least three feet away from bicyclists during an attempt to pass, according to a release from the Legislative Research Commission. If that much space isn’t available, the bill says that the drivers must use “reasonable caution” when passing cyclists.
Republican state Representative Jerry Miller of Louisville, sponsor of HB 33, said such measures are needed to protect cyclists in Kentucky, which has had fifteen fatalities in the past two years due to cyclist accidents.
The measure, which was approved by the House on February 9, now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
