A project to repair the track at Purdue Field cleared a hurdle Thursday night after floor plans were approved by the Trigg County School Board. Bruce Nelson, of JKS Architects and Engineers, says the plans involve resurfacing and restriping the existing track to comply with current standards.

The track, constructed in the 1970s, will be resurfaced with one and a half inches of asphalt and will have six lanes, enough to host local meets, according to Nelson.

The old track was measured in yards but the new one is to be in meters. The high, long and triple jumps will also be reworked. If approved by the state, the plans will serve as a common blueprint on which contractors can place bids.

In other business, looming budget cuts to education appear to be affecting more than public schools; university budgets are apparently also on the chopping block. Governor Matt Bevin vetoed a two-year budget proposal Monday despite calls from teacher’s unions to pass the bill and fund public education.

Thoroughbred Academy, a Murray State University program that enables juniors and seniors the chance to earn college credit prior to graduation, could also fall under the knife, imperiling the feasibility for Trigg students to participate, according to board discussion.

Board members voted 4-0 to continue funding the opportunity for another year at a cost of $15,800 as the budget is hammered-out in Frankfort. The motion to continue funding was put forth by Theresa Allen.

Gayle Rufli, who seconded the motion, says it was a no-brainer for her.

The administration welcomes students, parents and community members to join school staff at 7 a.m. Friday as they plan to wear red and gather in unity in front of the high school gymnasium in support of funding public education. The school will be open and operating on normal schedule.
