Benton Man Charged With Reckless Homicide

shooting-3

Authorities say a Benton man was arrested and charged Thursday morning after he shot a man on an ATV who may have been trying to steal Anhydrous Ammonia.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies responded to the area of Scale Road early in the morning hours to investigate a person stealing Anhydrous Ammonia and a shooting. The investigation revealed there had been a report of Anyhydrous Ammonia stolen on May 30th, but the suspect escaped on an ATV.

Around 3:40 Thursday morning, investigators say an ATV was again heard in the area of the Anhydrous Ammonia tank and a resident, identified as Kelly Allen of Benton, took his .38 caliber pistol and walked outside. Deputies indicate the suspect stopped at the end of Allen’s driveway and he fired two shots. The man on the ATV then traveled a short distance before stopping again. When Allen went to the location to check on the ATV rider, deputies say Allen discovered one of the rounds had hit the rider. When responders arrived at the scene the man was found deceased.

According to the sheriff’s office, Allen was charged with Reckless Homicide.

The investigation is continuing with the Marshall County Coroner’s Office working on notification of family and identification of the deceased man. Authorities say an autopsy was completed Thursday afternoon.
