State Police and the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating a fatal fire in Kuttawa that claimed the lives of a Lyon County woman and her son. State Police say the fire occurred shortly before 7:00 on Stevens Road, not far off of Interstate 24.
27-year old Steven Vinson was able to escape the mobile home, along with a 2-year old female, however, the fire was too intense for him to go back in. 29-year old Amber Girkant, and Nathaniel Vinson, who was just a week shy of being nine months old were unable to escape the residence. Nathaniel Vinson is the child of Steven Vinson and Amber Girkant.
Steven Vinson was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The 2-year-old girl was treated on the scene and released to her grandfather.
A preliminary investigation indicates the fire originated in the living room. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Girkant and Nathaniel Vinson died as a result of smoke inhalation.
