NWS Confirms Tornado Touched Down In Trigg Monday

A shed landed on its roof following a tornado that blew through the Blue River Road neighborhood Monday afternoon

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down for a short time in northern Trigg County early Monday afternoon.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin confirmed to the News Edge Wednesday morning that a low-level EF-1 tornado with winds up to 90 mph touched down and damaged some homes and several trees in the Rockcastle area. Shanklin adds the tornado touched down along the shoreline behind 243 Blue River Road and followed along a northeasterly path through the neighborhood. The path of the tornado was approximately 130 yards wide and traveled more than half a mile.

Sharon Gomez’s father owns the property at 243 Blue River Road. Gomez says they were in the basement of the home when the storm blew through.

Shanklin says eyewitnesses reported a waterspout in Lake Barkley after the tornado damaged the neighborhood. Other homes on Blue River Road sustained minor damage.


A tornado warning was issued for the area that was affected by the storm in northern Trigg County and portions of adjacent counties. A heavy wind gust of 85 MPH was reported in northern Christian County a short time later.Shanklin is not allowed to provide audio comments due to the national government shutdown.
