A Memphis man was arrested on numerous charges after a two-state police chase that ended in Calloway County Monday morning.
The Calloway County Sheriff’s Office reports they were notified of a police chase that was ongoing on U.S. Highway 641 in Henry County, Tennessee, that was making its way into Kentucky. Henry County units ended their chase in the city limits of Hazel with Calloway County deputies picking up the chase just south of Murray.
The suspect later identified as Vencie E. Bell, Jr. attempted to pass another northbound vehicle and almost struck Sheriff Sam Steger’s vehicle head-on. Steger reportedly initiated a traffic stop where Bell refused to stop and a pursuit began and headed into the Murray city limits. Bell turned onto Peggy Ann Drive and led numerous police vehicles on a chase through several residential streets. The pursuit ended in a yard on Kirkwood Drive where Bell exited his vehicle and fled on foot. A short time later, officers pulled over a suspicious vehicle where the driver reported Bell asked him to pick him up. Bell was later located in 1300 block of Peggy Ann Drive by a Murray Police Officer and was taken into custody by Sheriff Steger.
Bell was lodged in the Calloway County Jail facing 2 counts of 1st-degree wanton endangerment against a police officer, 1st-degree fleeing or evading police, and other charges. The Calloway County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Murray Police Department and Kentucky State Police during the chase. There is no word on what charges Bell will face from the Tennessee portion of the pursuit.
