Hepatitis A virus can live for months in a contaminated environment, particularly in the absence of good sanitation. It can also be easily spread if someone with the virus shares a cigarette or marijuana joint with others, through sharing towels, touching contaminated door handles or countertops and table surfaces. Health officials say a person with the virus is contagious for up to two weeks before showing symptoms.

Bassingthwaite says if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please go to your doctor to get checked out.

Hepatitis A can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. Although rare, health officials say it can cause death in some people. The Christian County Health Department will continue to provide updates to the public on this public health matter as it continues to evolve in our community and in Kentucky.
