Governor Matt Bevin has appointed a Murray native as the next Justice for the First Supreme Court District of Kentucky. Judge David Cowan Buckingham will take the seat vacated by Justice Bill Cunningham who retired February 1.
State officials say Buckingham graduated from Murray State University in 1974 and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 1977. He began his judicial career in 1982 and served as a district judge and then as a circuit judge for the 42nd Judicial Circuit. He also served for 14 years as a judge for the Kentucky Court of Appeals before retiring in 2011 and returning to private practice.
Judge Buckingham lives in Murray with his wife, Dianne Lee Buckingham and they have one son.
Earlier this month, officials announced the three nominees for the vacant seat included Buckingham, Tyler Landthrip Gill of Allensville and Carla Rene’ Williams of Dixon.
