A Trigg County Middle School student will be competing on the national level after recently bringing home the top honor in the Kentucky state “You Be The Chemist” challenge.
Gauge Wade was named champion, while Makenna Potts was the second-place finisher and Alivia Ennis rounded out the top tier finishers in fourth place. A total of seven students from Trigg County qualified for the event that was held Saturday, April 27th.
The “Challenge” is locally organized by Kat Sholly as an after-school Chemistry Club led by Trigg County Middle School science teacher Jessica Hepworth. Sholly says the Trigg County students dominated the state competition.
The You Be The Chemist® challenge was developed by the Chemical Education Foundation® (CEF) and is a question-and-answer competition which motivates fifth- to eighth-grade students to sharpen their knowledge of chemistry concepts and real-world applications. Students compete at the local and state levels and the ultimate prize of a trip to Washington D.C. to vie for college scholarships.
The winner of the state competition receives an expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Challenge, held June 17. At the national level, state winners from across the country will vie for the title of Challenge Champion and a total of $18,500 in college scholarships.
