Hopkinsville attorney, and former mayor, Dan Kemp was elected Friday as the next chair of the Murray State University Board of Regents.

WKMS reports Kemp is taking over the seat after the current Regents chair Susan Guess, who has served as a board member for nine years, announced she was stepping down when her term expired June 30. The radio  station in Murray says Kemp thanked Guess for her service and said he would try to do as good a job as she has to work with the entire board and making it a team effort.

After serving two terms as mayor of Hopkinsville from 2007 through 2014, Kemp returned to private practice in Hopkinsville. According to the MSU Board of Regents, Kemp was born in Murray and graduated from MSU in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in English History. He went on to get his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1970. Kemp also has served on numerous boards, including the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Bar Association and the Kentucky League of Cities.

Kemp has served as a Regent since August 2014 when he was appointed to a six-year term by former Governor Steve Beshear. His term expires in June 2020.
