Permitless Concealed Carry Law Effective Thursday In KY

Senate Bill 150, a new law that allows individuals to conceal carry without a permit in Kentucky, will go into effect Thursday. The bill was signed into law by Governor Matt Bevin in March.

Kentucky State Police Post 2 spokesman Trooper Rob Austin tells the News Edge it will allow those over the age of 21 to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. However, even with the new law, Austin says there are still some restrictions in which individuals cannot carry a concealed weapon.

He notes the new permitless conceal carry law does not overrule some other state laws.

Before traveling out of Kentucky, Austin says individuals need to check if the concealed carry law differs in any way in other states.

Prior to Senate Bill 150 becoming law, Kentuckians were required to get a permit before they carried a concealed firearm, which required a background check, taking a gun safety and training class and paying a mandatory fee.
