UPDATE – At Least One Dead, 13 Taken to Hospitals In 11-Vehicle Crash on I-24 in Lyon County (w/AUDIO)

State Police are continuing to investigate a multiple vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 24 in Lyon County, which has claimed as least one life, sending 13 to the hospital, and shut down the eastbound lanes of the interstate for an extended period of time. The crash occurred around 4:38 Friday afternoon.

During a media briefing at the Lyon County Courthouse, State Police confirmed one fatality and numerous injuries, some possibly critical as a result of the massive crash, which involved 11 vehicles, one of which was a semi, near the 51 mile marker, or about five miles west of the Cadiz-Princeton exit.

State Trooper J.B. Luckett, Post 1 spokesman, says witnesses told investigators the chain-reaction crash began when the semi struck another of the vehicles from behind, which had slowed due to the ongoing road construction in the area.

Five of the injured were flown from the scene, eight were transported by ground ambulance, and four others involved in the crash refused treatment at the scene.

The westbound lanes of the interstate were initially shut down as well, but have since re-opened.

The audio of the briefing is below.

Emergency personnel from Trigg, Lyon and Caldwell counties were all called to the scene. Multiple helicopters responded, and there were reports of multiple people trapped in their vehicles.
