The January trial of a Hopkinsville police officer charged with perjury has been continued until March in Christian Circuit Court.
Hopkinsville Police Department Lieutenant Jefferson Alexander was indicted for first-degree perjury in March by the Christian County Grand Jury for allegedly providing false testimony to the grand jury in 2012 in the case of former city councilwoman Ann Cherry.
Jefferson and his defense attorney Eric Eaton of Lexington appeared before Judge John Atkins for a pretrial conference in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday morning. Eaton filed a motion requesting the trial on January 6th and 7th be continued because his material witness, the former Commonwealth’s Attorney for Christian County, would not be available during that time.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling informed Judge Atkins he agreed with the trial being continued because he didn’t feel a deposition would be appropriate.
Judge Atkins asked Boling if he had explained the trial postponement to Cherry, at which time he replied yes that Cherry agreed with him that Lynn Pryor’s presence is vital.
In the case against Cherry, she resigned her city council seat as part of a plea agreement after she was charged with official misconduct, tampering with a witness, and tampering with public records.
In 2017, the insurance company for the City of Hopkinsville settled a federal lawsuit filed by Cherry and agreed to pay her $150,000, but did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
Alexander is still employed by the Hopkinsville Police Department.
