Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman said they will focus on improving education across the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a key part of their platform.
Beshear and Coleman took the oaths of office during a public swearing in ceremony Tuesday at the State Capitol in Frankfort.
During his inaugural address, Governor Beshear received strong reaction from the educator-filled crowd when he announced changes to the Kentucky Board of Education.
He also called for increased pay to help maintain and recruit teachers.
He cited statistics noting Kentucky is 47th in per capita income and 22 percent of children in the state live in poverty, statistics he plans to work on.
Meanwhile, Lt Governor Coleman said Team Kentucky is committed to improving the lives of all those who help educate our children.
The Governor was introduced by his wife Britiany, who was introduced by their children Will and Lila. Coleman was introduced by her father Jack Coleman. Also speaking during the ceremony was Beshear’s Senior Policy Advisor Rocky Adkins.
Following the Inauguration, Beshear and Coleman opened the Capitol to public for the first time ever. They also presented awards to some students whose quotes are included in posters.
On hand was former Governor Matt Bevin, Steve Beshear, Paul Patton, as well as Martha Layne Collins.
