An escapee from the Marshall County Detention Center was captured by Kentucky State Police Sunday night.
State police report Trooper Nathaniel Day was arriving at the jail with an arrestee when he was notified by staff around 7:00 Sunday night that an existing prisoner had just escaped from the rear of the detention center running toward Benton. Trooper Day immediately began searching the area and found the suspect, 30-year old Justin Smith of Louisville, in a nearby parking lot. Police say Smith surrendered and was taken into custody.
Smith was returned to the Marshall County Detention Center and charged with second-degree escapee and second degree fleeing and evading police.
According to state police, Smith has been incarcerated since 2016 for various charges out of Shelby County.
