Trigg Tourism Hoping To See Changes To Room Tax Ordinance

Trigg County Fiscal Court may approve a new Transient Room Tax ordinance in 2020 after some issues have arisen in collecting taxes.

During the January meeting of the Cadiz-Trigg County Tourist and Convention Commission, Judge/Executive Hollis Alexander and County Attorney Randy Braboy were on hand to talk about the current ordinance.

Alexander notes the ordinance does not have any way to ensure businesses or individuals are paying the tax.

Braboy adds the first ordinance was passed in 1986, with a revision made in 2010.

In conversations with Commission Executive Director Bill Stevens, Braboy learned they are having trouble identifying who is running a business.

One way to help fix the issue could be to set up a permitting process.

Braboy adds they could also put in the ordinance that if individuals or businesses fail to file, but are found to be operating, there could be repercussions.

Trigg County Fiscal Court members have the option to draft a new ordinance that falls in line with other county ordinances on the same issue and approve it at a future meeting.

The discussions about the ordinance occurred with all Tourist and Convention Commission members at their Thursday afternoon meeting.
