Ten of this year’s top Mayor’s Scholars were honored at the Hopkinsville City Council meeting Tuesday night.
To be selected as a Mayor’s Scholar, 8th-grade students must have a 2.5 GPA, maintain a 95% attendance rate, have no officer referrals, and submit an essay. This year’s essay theme was to outline the most pressing issues facing Christian County students and suggestions about how to address them.
City Council Presiding Officer Wendell Lynch said they had over 635 middle-schoolers in Christian County to participate this year. City Administrative Coordinator Nikki Durham noted the top 65 essayists are invited to enjoy a day-long field trip to Murray State University’s main campus on February 27.
In addition, Durham said the special tribute was paid to students writing the best essays including in-school recognitions, a trophy, and cash prizes ranging from $25 for those essays judged 2nd through 10th place and $50 for the 1st place essay.
The top ten Mayor’s Scholars included two students from University Heights Academy, four from Christian County Middle School, three from Hopkinsville Middle School, and one 8th grade student from Heritage Christian Academy.
