Work on Major Interstate 24 Improvement Project To Begin Wednesday

Motorists who routinely travel along Interstate 24 in Caldwell, Lyon, and Trigg counties need to be aware of an extended major work zone that will begin this week.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says that contractors are planning to start installation of a centerline barrier wall along the westbound lanes of I-24 near the 65-mile marker in Trigg County to about the 52-mile marker in Lyon County on Wednesday, March 4th. He states that this first phase of work for the major concrete pavement replacement and rehab project will have crews working westward from the 65-mile marker, installing the barrier wall in segments over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Todd adds that some short daytime lane restrictions along both eastbound and westbound lanes in this area may be required for prep work starting on Tuesday, as weather conditions allow.

He notes that all westbound motorists should be prepared to encounter slowing and merging traffic as they approach the 65-mile marker as traffic will move to the right-hand, or driving lane, in this work zone. Truckers should be aware this work zone will include a maximum 15-foot load width restriction for westbound traffic, however, there will be marked exit points for westbound loads that exceed this width.

The installation of the concrete barrier wall is to prepare for 2-way traffic to be established along the westbound lanes sometime in late-March or early-April. Construction of median crossovers for the project will also require some short work zone lane restrictions along the eastbound lanes in the coming weeks, as weather allows. As work progresses and 2-way traffic is established, truckers should be alert for a 12-foot load width restriction along the eastbound lanes.

Removing traffic from the eastbound lanes will allow the contractor to complete a full-depth replacement of concrete pavement along both eastbound lanes through the summer months.

The over $28 million highway improvement project has a target completion date of November 30, 2020.
