A woman who founded an organization in Clarksville, that is beginning to have an international reach, was the featured speaker for a Women’s History Month talk Thursday afternoon at Hopkinsville Community College.
Retired Sergeant First Class Tangi Smith spoke to students and staff members about her life; including growing up in a small town in eastern North Carolina, serving in the army, and serving as District 8 Montgomery County Commissioner. Additionally, Smith shared information about Women Elevated, LLC, a nonprofit organization she founded that helps those who need an extra hand and are above the national poverty level.
Smith describes the organization as a go-between for other organizations and yourself.
She adds they recently helped a woman who worked for the Tennessee government and was having a hard time making ends meet after paying to replace her water heater, which cost well over $3,000. To help her, the organization paid for her gas to travel to and from work for a few days and purchased Christmas presents for her children.
Smith says Women Elevated operates in several areas including Houston, Texas and a recent expansion to France. She has hopes to expand to Hopkinsville and Christian County, at some point in the near future.
The Hopkinsville program may not run the exact same way as the house on Tiny Town Road in Clarksville. Smith notes each program is suited to fit the needs of the community, but their main focus is helping women who are veterans.
The Clarksville program will also help men in need, but to date, they have never provided any financial support to them, just a place to stay when they were in desperate need.
