A portion of the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail will be closed during the day beginning Monday to allow for easement clearing work.
Superintendent of Grounds Maintenance at Hopkinsville Public Works, Blane Ezell says the Rail Trail will be closed from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. between the Dog Park at Pardue Lane and the bridge over Cox Mill Road, a stretch of just over a half-mile. He adds the work is expected to continue 3-4 days, depending on the weather.
According to Ezell, this section of the Rail Trail will be open before and reopened after the designated daily period. During the closure time, the additional section of the Rail Trail can still be accessed from trailheads and parking lots at North Drive or the Public Library. He notes the Dog Park and parking lot will remain open during this period.
Ezell says the trail closure is to allow crews from Hopkinsville Public Works and Hopkinsville Electric Service to trim trees and underbrush to maintain regulated safety distances around a major TVA high-tension service line that feeds a nearby substation.
The Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail is currently a 3.15-mile path for walking, jogging and biking. Phase 1 of the Rail Trail was completed in 2014. Phase 2 is underway and will add 1.7 miles of trail from Pardue Lane to near the Eagle Way Bypass with a 1,500-foot long pedestrian bridge to be constructed over Country Club Lane and Lafayette Road.
