Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Amy McGrath will be in Hopkinsville Saturday afternoon as a part of her statewide voter registration initiative.
McGrath will join Hopkinsville Mayor Wendell Lynch and other officials at Debow Recreational Complex at 307 North Drive around 1:30.
McGrath says with Governor Andy Beshear’s order restoring voting rights to those who’ve committed nonviolent felonies, she wants to help them get back on the voter rolls through education efforts. The campaign’s efforts will continue until the general election registration deadline on October 5.
McGrath adds she has called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to pass the House-passed bill restoring the Voting Rights Act. She is also asking him to rename it the John Lewis Act in honor of the congressman and civil rights leader who dedicated his life to expanding voting rights.
In addition, the League of Women Voters of Hopkinsville will host a pop-up voter registration drive Saturday morning from 10:00 until noon at the Debow Park Pavilion. They say if you are not registered to vote, to stop by and volunteers will assist you. All you need to register is a smartphone, basic contact information, and your Social Security Number. Officials say if you do not have a smartphone, you can still register on-site.
