Kentucky State Police, with the help of residents from across the entire state, raised over $16,000 to support Special Olympics of Kentucky (SOKY).
KSP Spokesman Sergeant Josh Lawson announced last week the first ever “Cover the Cruiser” event raised $16,206.16 through the donation of one dollar custom SOKY stickers, which were then stuck to a cruiser. He adds the “Cover the Cruiser” campaign was developed when the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each year the Torch Run escorts the Special Olympics Flame of Hope to kick off the Kentucky State Summer Games in Richmond.
Sergeant Lawson noted even in the midst of a global pandemic state troopers stepped up and took ownership of the new program and did what they needed to, whether it was during torrential downpours or sweltering heat, to demonstrate their service to the citizens of Kentucky.
Special Olympics is the world’s largest program of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and has been serving the needs of all athletes and their families since 1970. Currently there are over 11,000 Special Olympic athletes in Kentucky.
