The unemployment rate rose in all nine Pennyrile counties between July 2019 and July 2020, according to data released Thursday from the Kentucky Center for Statistics, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
Muhlenberg County reported the highest jobless rate in the Pennyrile District for July at 8.4 percent, up from 7.0 percent in July of last year, while Todd County posted the lowest unemployment rate of 4.7 percent, compared to 4.1 percent during the same month in 2019.
Christian County posted the second-highest unemployment rate in July of this year at 7.4 percent, up from 6.3 percent in July 2019, and Hopkins County had the third-highest jobless rate of 7.1 percent, compared to 5.0 percent in July of last year.
During the same time period, Livington County’s unemployment rate rose to 7.0 percent from 5.6 percent; Caldwell County’s jobless rate rose to 6.3 percent compared to 5.4 percent; Trigg County also reported a 6.3 percent jobless rate in July of this year, up from 5.1 percent in July 2019; Crittenden County’s unemployment rate was up slightly to 5.2 percent from 5.1 percent; and, Lyon County’s jobless rate showed a slight increase at 5.0 percent from 4.9 percent.
Statewide the unemployment rate rose in 109 counties during the same time period, fell in ten counties, and stayed the same in one county.
Oldham County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 4.2 percent, while Magoffin County recorded the highest rate in the state at 15.3 percent.
Kentucky’s comparable unemployment rate for July 2020 was 6.2 percent, compared to the U.S. Comparable Rate of 10.5 percent.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to people working. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
